Rouge Colère, Sombre Douleur

What hope for he who has subjugated himself to his selfishness and fashioned gods of his whims and caprices? What hope for he who has built himself a buttressed fortress of excessive intellectualisation in which to hide from the swarming armies of emotion outside? What hope for he who, believing himself ever starved in an unrelenting famine of time, searches frantically for more, more, and more?
What hope for he?

Some, I pray.

Get a hold of yourself, man!

*dashes cold water in VS's face*

Rouge colere, indeed. I suspect you of being hungover. Or of having accidentally read some Sartre recently.

Bucketloads of hope.

The bills will sort themself out, eventually.

It will pass, whatever it is.

We're all apes in clothes, pretending. But that's good.

Katy - Oh come on, what's wrong with a little rouge colère or sombre douleur for that matter? For once, I wasn't actually hungover...maybe that was the problem.

El Diablo - Shouldn't you be stroking a cat in your photo, like all evil ne'er-do-wells?

Anonymous 1 - I cannot take my eyes off AICM5P. Is it meant to mean something? Is it some code of great importance? Oh, I do love a code of great importance!

Anonymous 2 - The bills are paid, thank the Lord! I sometimes wonder if we clowning apes are, fundamentally, evil. It seems we cannot even live a life without hurting others around us. But you're right: it will pass.

Now let's face it - a chihuahua doesn't quite have the same effect, now, does it?

The phrase "sombre douleur" reminds me of "Bois Epais", a song by Lully. Thoroughly depressing (as would be any song that ends with "Je ne veux plus souffrire le jour") but quite beautiful. Makes me wish I hadn't quit singing lessons.

Take care of yourself, whatever you do.

Kate - I will attempt to find the song you mention, though a preliminary search on Limewire does not testify to its popularity. I've currently been driving my neighbours up the wall by playing the Adhan as sung by Yusuf Islam (yes, that's Cat Stevens to me and you) on repeat and at high volume.

Sadly I must confess that the title of this post was, in fact, taken from a line in a song playing while I was writing it, namely Je Sais Pas by...wait for it...Céline Dion.

El Diablo - Yes, that's much more menacing. ;o)

Note - Sadly, I think the authorities might frown somewhat on human sacrifice these days. However, I do know where to lay my hands on a good supply of newly-born infants should the mores of our times change.

Anonymous 1 - WWBTSMCBCISFL! (That's 'who would believe that such meaning could be compressed into so few letters' to the uninitiated.)

Um... yeah... Limewire probably not the greatest place to search, to be quite honest. The song was written in the 17th century =)

And Céline Dion? Dude... I'm even Canadian and... ew. (I could go on a rant about Ms. D, but won't... it wouldn't be pretty).

Yes, well, don't be too quick to judge Limewire. There's plenty of stuff by Lully on there by virtue of that rather tragic film, Le Roi Danse. Just sadly not Bois Épais.

Hm. Speaking of human sacrifice, I spent my day in the library looking up 16th century account of executions. There were some good ones with hanging and disembowelling and...

If you're really desperate for Bois Epais, there's a version at THIS SITE but it's slightly scratchy (it was recorded in 1920 after all) and the site takes rather a while to load.

El Diablo - oooo, hark at you and your witty political snipes.

Kate - I imagine being disembowelled to be a particularly unpleasent way to go.

You're v. quiet, Dr Sinner - hope you're finally getting some decent sleep? Or having some other sort of out-of-work-time fun?

By the way, nothing to do with anything, can I recommend 'Overheard in New York' - a whole 'nuther world.

Sorry, yes, The Venial Sinner has been disconnected from his broadband whilst he moves house and hence cannot write. He shall resume talking to himself as soon as tiscali see fit to reinstate the connection that he is still paying them for! He shall also check out the link as he really rather likes the idea of New Yoik.

Well, if the New Yoik one tickles your fancy, there's a link off it which leads you to 'overheard in the office' which is also very funny. Only open Monday to Friday, though, as befits an office.

Good luck with Tiscali. Did you hear Marcus Brigstocke ranting on 'The Now Show' (Radio 4), who had similar problems with BT? Very funny.
